Housekeepers and maintenance engineers are the backbone of any resort operation. Here at Club de Soleil, a sunny French Mediterranean-style property near the world famous Las Vegas Strip, we took the opportunity recently to celebrate their hard work with a day a food, fun and recognition. Nearly 20 of our most valuable team members gathered on the Club 1 tennis court, where they participated in a series of contests that tested their steadiness, challenged their precision and relieved them of their senses.
“Thank you for taking the time to join us for our celebration,” assistant general manager Thomas Price told the assembled prior to the competition. “We appreciate what you do here every day and extend our sincere gratitude to you for your hard work and dedication. I am constantly amazed by your ability to keep smiling and maintain a positive attitude, so it is with great pleasure that we hold this special day for you.”
Splitting into two teams for each event, the participants competed in what may be termed a Housekeeper Olympics, where the winners earned gold-colored medals, the accolades of their peers and bragging rights for an entire year.
SHAKY TRAY RELAY RACE
First to test their skill was the four-person Shaky Tray Relay Race, a nervy balance exercise that required each contestant to carry a tray of wobbly shower amenities from the tennis court baseline to a partner standing at the net. That individual in turn would retrace the steps back to the baseline and hand off the tray to another waiting teammate. If the contents of the tray spilled before each carrier reached the desired destination, the individual was required to return to the original starting point, reset the amenities and try again, meanwhile falling ever farther behind. This was repeated four times until the team with the steadiest gate crossed the finish line first without a spill.
WILD WILD WASHCLOTH
Next was the Wild Wild Washcloth, a pressure-packed exercise in fast folding aptitude where the winners were judged to have folded the most towels in three minutes. The catch? Each folded washcloth had to meet a strict set of guidelines as determined by management, which was as follows:
Guideline 1: the label must hidden.
Guideline 2: the fluffy ends must be visible on both sides.
Folded towels that did not conform to these exacting standards were disqualified.
Lastly, Can’t See Sheet was an object lesson in ocular independence. For this event, two teams of two blindfolded participants stood face to face holding an outstretched bed sheet. The team to fold it neat, fold it fast and fold it first was declared the winner.
